How to Choose an OWCP Doctor in Denver
Under the Federal Employees' Compensation Act (FECA), you — not your agency — get to choose your OWCP treating physician. That decision shapes everything: your restrictions, your CA-17s, your CA-20 narrative, and ultimately whether your claim gets paid. Here is how injured Denver federal workers should evaluate an OWCP doctor before their first visit.
1. Confirm They Actually Accept OWCP
Not every Denver clinic will take a federal workers' comp claim. OWCP pays through the Department of Labor — not private insurance — and reimbursement rates and paperwork requirements are different. Before you book, verify the provider is enrolled with DOL/OWCP and regularly bills the program. Ask directly: "Do you take OWCP as primary and bill DOL directly?"
2. Look for OWCP/DOL Experience — Not Just a License

3. Ask About Turnaround Time on Forms
A CA-17 that sits in a fax queue for two weeks can cost you a pay period. Denver's better OWCP clinics complete duty status forms the same day as the visit and provide copies to both you and your employing agency. If a provider can't tell you their turnaround policy, that's a red flag.
4. Location Matters — but Access Matters More

Fragmented care leads to missing records — and OWCP denies claims for missing records.
Pressure to see a company-preferred provider
You have the right to change OWCP doctors. Your agency cannot force a choice.
Can I Switch OWCP Doctors?
Yes. Your initial choice of physician is yours to make. Changing your treating physician after that first choice generally requires written OWCP approval, but if your current provider isn't completing forms, isn't communicating with DOL, or isn't willing to document your restrictions accurately, that's exactly the situation the change-of-physician process exists for.
